For the first time since its creation, the Eastern Park Maulévrier (France) will host an exhibition of 20 artists of sumi-e from around the world from August 25th to September 9th 2012.
The participating artists are members of the International Institute of Chinese painting and calligraphy (ICCPS) and are among the best in the world of sumi-e painting.
Eastern Park Maulévrier is the largest Japanese garden in Europe.
The participating painters are exhibiting their work in order to show visitors the diversity offered by the technique of sumi-e which is not limited to painting bamboo and chrysanthemum.
The technique of sumi-e dates back to the 14th century and requires only water, a brush, rice paper and ink. Even though the tools for creating sumi-e are minimal, the possibilities of sumi-e are expansive. One can paint anything and everything using sumi-e. There are as many possible subjects and interpretations as there are painters. Everything depends on the feeling.
The goal of this exhibition is to demonstrate the universality of sumi-e in contemporary painting.
